The Sir Donald Bailey Academy Redesign

Recently at PrimarySite we had the opportunity to redesign a website for one of our original clients, with an open design brief myself and a few colleagues created a set of concepts wildly different from anything we’d done before. For me this was a hugely exciting process, along with being an honour to be encouraged to be this creative with such an important client.

The factors to consider for this design that were the client wanted something innovative and new – while incorporating a full width slideshow.  As they were in the process of transforming from a primary school to an academy, they wanted a design which was formal and fitting for an academy. The client had provided a brand bible along with 10 versions of their new logo, to influence the colour choices.

It was also important to consider the short turn around time involved in this process, we worked closely with the developer who would be building the website in order to present concepts which were do-able in the time available.

For one design I chose to overlay elements of their logo with a fixed header and solid footer. When creating this design I knew it could be beautiful, but it didn’t tick all of the boxes in terms of content elements the client required.

I then adjusted this design to include these elements, but for me the design became cluttered and distracting. After spending two days creating concepts while bouncing between the clients dreams and the developers limitations, we presented 5 concepts to the clients. To my surprise, the client selected my original concept – which was missing some of the elements they had wanted. After minor font changes we were ready to build. Within 36 hours the had site was built, tested, responsive and delivered to the client.

For me this project was an excellent test of my skills, and creative process. It was excellent to see a 4 day turnaround from design brief to a launched website and a happy client. We worked together as a team to deliver another excellent product, which I feel reflects the true benefit of working within PrimarySite – they are a small company able to pull together and deliver an excellent product.
